New requirements for handling diisocyanates

On August 04, 2020, the new REACH restriction on diisocyanates was published. This restriction is intended to minimize the health risk of skin and respiratory sensitization possibly caused by diisocyanates. The REACH restriction states that from August 24, 2023, diisocyanates may only be used as a substance, constituent of a substance or in a mixture if the concentration is < 0.1 percent by weight or it is ensured that the user has completed training on the safe use of diisocyanates prior to use.

Important deadline

By August 24, 2023, your employees must be trained and certified in the safe use of products containing diisocyanates. This applies to the use of products with a total concentration of monomeric diisocyanate of > 0.1%. The KENT products concerned have been marked with a notice on the label since February 24, 2022, indicating that training is required.

Training on the handling of diisocyanates

FEICA (Federation of the European Adhesives and Sealants Industry) has produced training materials in coordination with ISOPA (European Trade Association of Aromatic Diisocyanates and Polyols Manufacturers) and ALIPA (European Trade Association of Aliphatic Isocyanates Manufacturers), the European industry associations of diisocyanate manufacturers. Information on PU training can be found at: safeusediisocyanates.eu.
